Children's Book Illustration for non-fiction
The Burning of Knockcroghery is a fully self-published historical book that I wrote, illustrated, and designed, combining archival research with visual storytelling to document a defining moment in Ireland’s past. Centred on the reprisal attack carried out by the Black and Tans in 1921, the narrative follows the experiences of an ordinary local family, drawing from real events to create an authentic and emotionally resonant account.
Using editorial illustration, structured book layout, and considered typography, I developed a visually driven publication that guides readers through themes of destruction, resilience, and community rebuilding. Each element was carefully composed to balance historical accuracy with readability, ensuring the story feels immediate and engaging for contemporary audiences.
The project demonstrates expertise across authoring, book design, historical illustration, editorial layout, and self-publishing, resulting in a cohesive publication that preserves local heritage while showcasing the power of illustration-led storytelling.
